WELCOME TO BACKWELL SCHOOL LIBRARY!

The Library is a calm, work-orientated environment where all students and staff are welcome to read, study and relax throughout the school day. We have a large variety of resources to enjoy and study: fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, CDs and magazines. Students can borrow most resources for a month at a time. We also have e-readers, loaded with a variety of popular ebooks, available to use in the Library during Reading Lessons and break times. Talking books are available on CD to borrow or listen to in the library.

All KS3 students have a fortnightly Reading Lesson in our Fiction Room, where they are encouraged to read for pleasure and are introduced to new authors, series and genres by the Library staff and their own peers.

During lessons the 6th form use the Library for Private Study with access to laptops and the printer/copier. Students are shown how to use Library catalogues and on-line databases and given the skills to search these intelligently. Many are working towards their EPQ.

Authors, poets and other speakers are occasionally invited in to speak and work with students in all year groups. The Library staff run Team Quizzes on literary themes each term.

We have a large group of keen readers (Y7-10) who shadow the Carnegie Book Award every year and are set to start a Manga and Graphix Club which will lead in to judging the Excelsior Award for Graphic Novels.
