What are Free School Meals?

The government recognises the benefits of providing a healthy school meal to students that meet the eligibility criteria (aged up to 16). Children are entitled to a free meal every day whilst at school.

Eligibility for Free School Meals

Since April 2018, the criteria used to determine which children are eligible has been updated to reflect the introduction of Universal Credit and the phasing out of other income-based benefits.

Children attending Backwell whose parents or carers receive any of these benefits are entitled to free school meals:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit with annual Take Home Pay/Net Earnings below £7,400 (which equals £616.67 per month) benefits not included
